Watch the extended highlights of City's meeting with Manchester United a the Etihad Stadium...

In what was the first meeting between the cross-city rivals this term, it was Marc Skinner’s side who prevailed in an end-to-end affair in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Following a beautifully observed minute’s applause in honour of club legends Tony Book and Denis Law who both sadly passed away in the week, the visitors made their bright start count, racing into a two-goal lead.

Ella Toone broke the deadlock when chipping into the net after latching onto Leah Galton’s pass into her feet before the latter turned from provider to scorer to extend the advantage.

Gareth Taylor‘s side were unable to clear a corner and the English forward tucked home from close range after the ball fell kindly at her feet.

City rallied though through Jill Roord and Vivianne Miedema with the latter seeing an effort blocked before she teed up Aoba Fujino who curled just wide with her left foot.

Our good recovery work was undone, though, with 10 minutes of the first half remaining when Terland pinched the ball back just inside the area and combined with Toone again, who added her second and United’s third.

A bitter blow for the Blues, but we produced a remarkable response to drag ourselves back into derby contention before half-time with goals from Miedema and Rebecca Knaak on her WSL debut.

The Dutch forward pulled a goal back when showing her poacher’s instinct to loser her marker in the box before heading Mary Fowler‘s inviting cross into the net before the German defender repeated the trick to powerfully nod home from a corner.

City had deservedly set up a grandstand second half, but Manchester United landed a sucker-punch seconds after the interval when Toone passed into an empty net after Elisabeth Terland had blocked a Khiara Keating cross - presenting the opportunity to the visitors’ forward.

Fowler came close to pulling a goal back when she swept Roord’s cross towards the bottom corner, but Phallon Tullis-Joyce produced a phenomenal save to tip the ball around the post.
