Gareth Taylor praised his side’s resilience to get over the line after beating Manchester United 2-1 in the League Cup quarter-finals.

City will now face Arsenal in the last four thanks to goals from Laura Coombs and Lily Murphy at Leigh Sports Village.

We had to absorb plenty of pressure from the hosts but held on to regain local bragging rights after Sunday’s WSL defeat at the Etihad to United.

A derby win is often earned through courage and determination, and the boss felt his side displayed both of those across the 90 minutes.

“It was a real gutsy performance, tonight we really matched the endeavour which United probably edged us with on Sunday,” Taylor said.

“It was more hustle and bustle tonight and finding a way to win, and you have to credit the girls for that.

“We spoke about it before the game, a lot of the time you don’t come away from a derby thinking you’ve had a top-class performance, it’s usually effort and endeavour.”
