Phil Foden: Trust in Pep Guardiola paying off

Phil Foden says his trust in Pep Guardiola has been rewarded after winning the 2020/21 PFA Young Player of the Year award.

The midfielder enjoyed an outstanding season to help Manchester City lift the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

It was a coming-of-age campaign for the 21-year-old, who has had to be patient in his wait to truly establish himself in the first team, and, whilst he admits breaking through has been challenging, he always had faith in Guardiola’s methods and feels he has grasped the opportunity to prove his credentials.

“I was always just focused on the club and playing here,” he told after adding the prestigious PFA award to his Premier League Young Player of the Season prize.

“I trusted the manager and the things he was telling me and the advice to keep going and working hard and you’ll get your opuntias.

“I just knuckled down, trained properly every single day and it is starting to pay off now.

“It’s been so difficult [to break through], to play at this club with the players that we have, so many talents.

“I’ve had to keep working hard every day and believing in the process, working hard every single training session and hopefully I get the chance and then, when the chance has come, I’ve just tried to play well and I feel like I’ve taken my opportunity to play.”

Foden also discussed the confidence Guardiola has given him, the team spirit in the City camp and the upcoming European Championships with England.
