City begin this season’s quest against Red Bull Leipzig on Wednesday evening, hoping to go one better than last May by reaching the final and winning the competition.
But the Spain star admits it take a monumental effort to become European champions.
When asked whether winning the Champions League is something City must do, he said: “I don’t know. We don't have to, it's a dream for all of us but it’s not compulsory.
“Only one team can win and the others don’t. We focus on ourselves. The trophies are in the last part of the season.
“It’s our dream. The club works in last ten years to achieve this but winning the Champions League depends on small details.
“We have to keep working and see ourselves if we can do what we did last season.”
He was also asked whether English teams are now the dominant force in European club football – adding: “Well, in the sense of arriving in the finals and having teams in the Champions League and Europa League, then yes.
“But six years ago it wasn't like this, it was the Spanish league. But it depends on the opinion of the people.
“I know English football and it’s getting stronger and stronger. I always say we have a small super league in here in the Premier League, with amazing teams, but Europe is so different.
“You don't focus on your league. The German, Spanish leagues are so different.
“Tomorrow we face a very good German team. We have to focus on ourselves and the game tomorrow.”
