Pep: City’s strength lies in the collective

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have been ‘exceptional’ so far this season because of the squad's collective ethos.

Fernandinho’s late strike in Sunday’s 2-1 win over West Ham means an incredible 16 different members of the first team squad have found the net so far this season in all competitions.

Indeed, only Chelsea and Liverpool have found the net more times as a squad than City in the Premier League despite none of our players being among the top ten leading marksmen.

And with the hectic winter period on the horizon, Guardiola has called for his players to continue valuing the team over the individual, starting with Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa.

“We defend and attack as a team or we will not survive,” he declared at his pre-match press conference.

“But I am so happy with the way we play. The way we have done so far has been exceptional in terms of the (Premier) League and the Champions League.

"The way that we are playing is exceptional. We have the toughest month of the season ahead of us with a lot of games so we have to continue."
