Pep Guardiola: Players must take Christmas COVID-19 precautions

Pep Guardiola won’t ask his players to avoid celebrating Christmas with their families and friends, but wants them to ensure they take the necessary COVID-19 precautions.

Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City have both been affected by Coronavirus outbreaks this week and Guardiola says his squad are aware they need to take extra care to limit the chances of Manchester City being in the same situation during the busy festive period.

The boss understands players will want to spend time with their loved ones over Christmas and New Year, but says it is important they pay attention to the measures which will keep them, their families and the team safe.

“They know they have to be careful and be at home as much as possible and when you go out, social distance and wear a mask,” he said ahead of City’s game against Wolves.

“Just look at the statistics and the rules from the government. It is still there, unfortunately, and there are set-backs.

“You have to protect yourself because at Christmas time there is a tendency for more parties and going out more often.

“Everyone at home organises a party with family and kids. I think they are going to do it.

“Today, with lateral flow tests and PCRs, everyone can do it more easily than the previous Christmas. We are not going to say don’t do it, but be careful. The risk is high.

“Look at what happened at Tottenham and Leicester. It can happen here as well if we don’t pay attention.

“That is a big problem, for them, for their health and family, but, of course, for the team.”
