Guardiola reflects on demands of hectic and historic festive period

Pep Guardiola says he enjoys English football’s Christmas fixture schedule but admits his players will have to play to their limit during the busy festive period.

Manchester City host Wolves on Saturday lunchtime, in what will be the fourth of eight games the defending Premier League champions play in December, with a Leeds United visiting the Etihad Stadium just three days later.

Having experienced a winter break during his time in charge of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola likes the tradition of English football’s most hectic month, though he concedes he will be praying his side don’t suffer any injuries during the physically demanding run of games.

“It’s good, it's historic,” he said at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wolves' visit.

“I like to play in the winter during this period.

“My words are not going to change anything. When you have just two days rest in the Christmas time and New Year there's no time for players to recover.

“We discuss this every year and nothing changes, so we adapt, adjust and pray the players will not get injured.

“The players have the ability to stretch their limits as much as possible. That’s what they have to do.”
