Pep Guardiola sounded a special salute to the impact of Rico Lewis after the teenager’s superb display in City’s 2-1 pre-season friendly win against Bayern Munich in Tokyo.

Deployed in a creative midfield role, the teenager produced a magnificent first half display before making way as one of eight changes at the break.

James McAtee, with his first senior goal, and Aymeric Laporte with a late strike were both on target as City made it two wins out of two on our Asia Tour 2023.

There were numerous positives for Guardiola to reflect on – not least another impeccable display from Academy graduate Lewis.

“Once again, I don’t remember a game that he don’t play last season at the level that he deserves to be here,” the City boss declared.

“He played in the pockets.

“He is so smart and he understands everything. He is reliable in many things.

“We are really pleased he is a player from the Academy, we brought him up to play the way he plays now.”
