Dickov and Goater on City’s ‘huge plus’ in the Premier League title race

With the Premier League title race set to go the wire, Manchester City a braced for a dramatic final day of the season against Aston Villa, but Paul Dickov and Shaun Goater both believe Pep Guardiola’s men would have gladly accepted this scenario at the beginning of the campaign.

City host Villa on Sunday 22 May knowing victory over Steven Gerrard’s side would see us crowned champions for the fourth time in five seasons, regardless of the outcome of Liverpool’s meeting with Wolves at Anfield.

It could be a tense afternoon at the Etihad Stadium, but Dickov and Goater say having our destiny in our own hands is a huge positive.

“Going into the home game against Aston Villa on Sunday, the Etihad is going to be jumping,” said Dickov.

“The fans will be buzzing. There will be a little bit of nerves as well, because we never like to do it the easy way, but to have it in our own hands, with the team we have got, the fans we have got and the management we have got is a huge plus.

“I think at the start of the season, half way through the season and even a few weeks ago, to go into a one off game and to win the game, we would have taken that.”

Goater is in agreement and whilst City go into the match with injury issues in defence, our former striker is confident Guardiola will still be able to get the best out of his squad.

“If you asked me at the beginning of the season would I take having to win the last game at home, I would have said yes,” he added.

“This crowd will be rocking, absolutely going mental. I know we are down to the bare bones in terms of central defenders, but at the same time, I will take that because Pep seems to find a way to get players to play in certain position and perform.”
