A second half brace from Erling Haaland helped secure a 10th straight win for City in all competitions.
For 70 minutes the Merseyside visitors had put up stern resistance to try and keep Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions at bay.
But, as so often, Haaland proved the difference with the Norwegian registering what were his first goals since late November following his two-month injury lay off.
The striker made the all-important breakthrough on 71 minutes, rifling home a superb shot from the left edge of the box.
And five minutes from time, Erling struck again, coolly despatching substitute Kevin De Bruyne’s latest assist to chalk up his 16th Premier League goal of the season.
