Classic derby highlights: City 4-1 United 2004

On this day in 2004 City played host to the first Manchester derby to be staged at the Etihad – and we celebrated in fitting style, chalking up an emphatic 4-1 win over United.

Roared on by a passionate full-house at what was then the City of Manchester Stadium, Kevin Keegan’s side stormed to a memorable victory against Sir Alex Ferguson’s reigning champions as we memorably claimed the maiden Manchester derby bragging rights at our new home.

City got off to the perfect start when Robbie Fowler touched the ball in to give us a third minute lead.

Jon Macken then doubled our advantage, as he swivelled and sent a first-time volley into the corner of the net before Paul Scholes gave the visitors hope with a 20-yard strike.

However, Trevor Sinclair pounced after a Mikael Silvestre error to extend our advantage before Shaun Wright-Phillips then set the seal on a memorable afternoon as he smashed home a stunning, iconic late drive.
