The Belgian produced a superb individual display at the Etihad Stadium, scoring twice in a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Reds to restore City’s six-point lead at the top of the table.

With 10 games remaining, De Bruyne feels it a meaningful result for Guardiola’s men, as we bid to defend our title, and was delighted to be able to give the fans reason to celebrate.

“When you come to the end of the season every game is hard, but playing a big game it is always important to get the three points,” he told afterwards.

“The meaning behind the derby is always a little bit more, so we’re happy that we could win it.

“[The fans] help the players perform how they need to perform. It can push is in bad moments. It was nice to see everyone jumping around.
