United had taken an early lead when Ryan Giggs slid home from close range for Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
However, Tevez - who had famously made the cross city move to the Etihad from Old Trafford in the summer of 2009 - then took centre stage either side of half time.
First the Argentine striker struck from the penalty spot three minutes before the break after Craig Bellamy had been fouled by Rafael da Silva.
And Tevez then struck again to raise the roof of the Etihad on 65 minutes when he headed home inside the six yard box to hand City the first-leg advantage and derby bragging rights.
