Janine Beckie said she believed Manchester City’s special team spirit proved the key ingredient in helping the Club secure Continental Cup glory against Arsenal.
The Blues fought out a tense final with the Gunners at Bramall Lane, with the sides still goalless after normal and extra time before City claimed the trophy thanks to a dramatic 4-2 win on penalties.
Reflecting on the triumph, Beckie said: “We deserved this as a team. Everyone put in a huge shift over the course of the campaign. We played as a team and stuck to the game plan.”
Team-mate Claire Emslie added: “Everyone worked so hard and we deserved it. It’s great to win the first trophy and hopefully we can now get some more.”
It was also a special afternoon for player of the match Caroline Weir who collected her first silverware after joining the club after producing a tireless display.
Reflecting on the game, Weir told City TV: “It’s great to win my first trophy. It was tough but we all stuck together, and we were confident going into the game.
“KB pulled off some great saves and our penalty takers were great and it was a real squad effort.”
