Ilkay Gundogan believes that Sunday’s excellent Community Shield win over Chelsea served as the perfect dress rehearsal for Manchester City ahead of this weekend’s start to the new Premier League campaign.
The Blues produced a superb all-round display amidst scorching Wembley temperatures as two goals in either half from Sergio Aguero helped secure a 2-0 win and delivered the first silverware of the season.
An assured, commanding performance from Pep Guardiola’s players was all the more impressive given that many of the squad had only resumed training last week following their World Cup exploits.
And with the champions opening the defence of our Premier League title away at Arsenal next Sunday, German international Gundogan – who came on as a half-time substitute at Wembley – believes the manner of the win over Chelsea augurs well.
Gundogan said: “At the start of the season you never know what level you are on which is why Sunday was almost like a perfect test ahead of the Premier League season.
“We feel ready right now and we can’t wait for the season to start.”
