Blending Sports and Statistics at Man City: Joshua Barnum’s Undergraduate Summer Experience.
Meet Joshua Barnum from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is currently studying Data Science and Analytics with a minor in Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. He was part of the Man City Undergraduate Summer cohort of 2025.
Why did you choose to study with us at Man City Undergraduate Summer?
I chose the Man City Undergraduate Summer program because I have always known I wanted to work in the sports industry. I was eager to experience how a world-class organization operates at the highest level and to understand how data and analytics contribute to performance, decision-making, and overall success.
What was the most valuable lesson or skill you learned during your course?
The most valuable takeaway from the course was gaining insight into the systems, tools, and qualifications that professional analysts use on a daily basis. The Q&A sessions were especially impactful, as they provided practical, real-world perspectives that are difficult to access in a traditional classroom setting.
What was your student experience like?
I was initially anxious, as it was my first time traveling outside the United States and entering a completely new environment. However, from the first day, the group quickly bonded during the tour, and we began spending time together both academically and socially. I formed a close group of friends with whom I spent the rest of the program. On weekends, we explored different parts of the UK, attended football matches, and even travelled to Barcelona together. The friendships I built during this experience have remained meaningful, and I consider several of the people I met to be among my closest friends.
Did Man City Undergraduate Summer influence any decisions you made about your education?
Yes, it had a significant impact. Before the program, I was undecided between specializing in Computer Science or Statistical Analysis. After attending a player analysis workshop led by an industry professional, I realized that statistical analysis aligned perfectly with my interests and career goals. That experience gave me clarity about the direction I wanted to pursue professionally.
Which industry would you like to work in once you have graduated?
I hope to work in player analysis within the sports industry, using data to support performance evaluation, recruitment, and strategic decision-making.
What advice would you give to a student attending Man City Undergraduate Summer for the first time?
It is normal to feel nervous about entering a new environment, but this program can become one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Be open to meeting new people, stay engaged academically, and take full advantage of every opportunity offered. The connections you build and the experiences you gain can shape your future in ways you may not expect.
