Sergio Aguero admits he is flattered by Alan Shearer’s opinion that the City striker is the Premier League’s greatest import.

The Newcastle United and England legend turned Match of the Day pundit has become one of the most respected voices in English football and is the all-time Premier League top goal-scorer.

Shearer recently said: ‘Sergio Aguero is now on nine Premier League hat-tricks and only two behind me.

‘He is the best foreign player to ever play in the Premier League - a great centre-forward with no weaknesses.”

Few would argue with that view of a player who has so far bagged 204 goals in 297 games for the Blues.

And with Sergio starting the new season in excellent form and easily winning the August Etihad Player of the Month award, he looks likely to kick on and continue breaking Club and national records with City.

Though Kun still has some way to go to eclipse Shearer’s 379 goals in all competitions, he says receiving such high praise from the most prolific striker the Premier League has ever seen, means so much.

“It was very flattering to hear Alan Shearer holding me up in such a high regard,” said Aguero.

Sergio Aguero: Making of a Ballon d'Or contender

“He was a fantastic striker and there’s good reason he’s the Premier League’s top scorer. His words encourage me to stay on course and keep scoring goals for City.”

Sergio’s ninth Premier League hat-trick against Huddersfield Town last month put him just two behind Shearer’s 11 – and Kun would be happy to replace him at the top of the tree, though says he is only focusing on helping the team rather than chase individual records.

“Obviously I hope I reach that mark!” he smiled.

“That said, it’s not something I’d lose sleep over. If it happens, it’s because the team is doing well, and that’s what matters.

“Meanwhile, the record will stay in very good hands.”
