Powerful, athletic central defender
Eliaquim Mangala made a name for himself as one of Europe’s most promising defenders before moving to City in August 2014.
The Parisian had built an impressive CV during spells with Standard Liege and Porto and was admired for his speed, power, positional sense and tackling, as well as posing a threat from set pieces.
He featured regularly in his first two seasons at the Etihad Stadium, but has enjoyed loan spells away from the Club since 2016/17.
A Liege debutant aged just 17, Mangala helped the Belgian club to a league and cup double in his first season and gained valuable Champions League experience.
He moved to Porto in 2011 and lifted back to back league titles in his first two seasons, before departing for City at the end of his third campaign.
He enjoyed an excellent debut against Chelsea and racked up more than 60 appearances during his first two seasons at City, standing out in the home win over Paris St-Germain in April 2016 that secured a semi-final spot in the Champions League.
Eliaquim spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan with Valencia and though he played for half of the 2017/18 season with City, he joined Everton on loan in February 2018, but sustained an injury that ended his campaign shortly after arriving on Merseyside.
He spent a prolonged spell on the side lines, but stepped up his recovery in 2019, when he featured in five games for City’s Elite Development Squad
