Kelly goal the icing on the cake for Morgan

Esme Morgan says Chloe Kelly’s return to goal-scoring in Saturday’s Women’s FA Cup semi-final win over West Ham made the 4-1 victory all the sweeter.

It was Kelly’s first goal for almost a year following a serious knee injury sustained in May 2021.

The England forward put City 2-0 up against the Hammers with a typically clinical and composed finish and Morgan, who has also recently returned to training after breaking her leg against Spurs last September, says she couldn’t be happier for her team-mate.

Speaking on Matchday Live, the 21 year-old defender said: “I’m buzzing! I’m glad the girls were able to do that and put in a good performance!

“We had a couple of goals disallowed too. But the highlight for me is that Chloe scored. I’m so, so pleased for her that she’s back in scoring form.

“Hopefully she can keep that going for the last few games and in the FA Cup final.

“We’ve found our form and the style of play that Gaz wants us to play, we’re in that groove now.”

Gareth Taylor’s side, who won the competition in 2020, will face either Arsenal or Chelsea in the final at Wembley next month.

And Morgan believes City’s past triumphs at the home of English football could be key to winning the trophy again.

“I’ve got so many good memories of it as a fan,” she said.

“We’ve won the FA Cup twice there now, there have been such great celebrations there.

“Hopefully we will have another one at Wembley in a month or so.

“The fans miss those occasions, it’s such a special occasion for so many people.”
