Manchester City will host two giants of the international game at 7.45pm on Friday 23 March, when home favourites Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi will be joined by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi.
For Argentina, the fixture offers an early opportunity to prepare for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, having sealed their spot after Messi’s sublime hat-trick against Ecuador in October.
Italy won’t be in Russia, but with a rich pedigree at international level, will no doubt present a stern test in front of the Etihad crowd.
“It’s an honour to have two of the great footballing nations play at our home stadium as the Premier League takes a break,” said Omar Berrada, Manchester City’s Chief Operating Officer.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to watch some of the best Club football in the world at the Etihad this season, I’m sure this international match will be another game to enjoy.”
Argentina will base themselves at the City Football Academy during the international break, with manager, Jorge Sampaoli saying: “Each match and training session is fundamental for us in preparation for the World Cup. Playing against Italy, in a venue as important as Etihad Stadium, is an invitation to a great event.
“Every Argentine in the world wants to be there when the National Team plays. We are certain they will accompany us for this one.”
Italy boss Luigi Di Biagio added: “I am sure the match will be a great event, representing two of the winningest most successful teams, boasting together six World Cups.
“On the pitch you will see champions that have made recent football history.
“For us this friendly, the first for Italy at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, represents a very important test.
“We want to start again with enthusiasm and with the will to begin a road that will lead us far.”
