Super sub Campbell delighted with impact

SPECIALIST: Megan Campbell played a key role in Man City Women's 3-2 win at Reading, thanks to her long throws

Megan Campbell catapulted Man City Women to their first Spring Series victory… almost single-handedly!

With the Blues trailing 2-1 at Reading with 15 minutes to go, the Irish defender was introduced from the bench and turned the game on its head with two assists – both via her trademark long throws.

The 23-year-old joined the Club in February 2016 but has unfortunately suffered with injury for much of her time in Manchester. She hopes now to have put such troubles behind her and wishes to play a major role as Nick Cushing’s side bid to retain their league title.

Reflecting on the victory at Adams Park, she declared: “Coming off the bench, 2-1 down, I wanted to make an impact and fortunately, I was able to provide for the team.

“We fought until the very end and got the two goals.”

Though proud of her special skill, Campbell is sure her side will not have to rely on it too often.

She continued. “The City way is to get the ball down and play football but in those circumstances, when you’re trying to battle and win the game, character shows.

“I’ve been able to do it since I was 14. As I grew, it got longer and it’s a nice asset to have.

“Hopefully, we won’t have to use it as much as we did.”

Manager Cushing was delighted with Campbell’s contribution and hopes the defender can enjoy more gametime.

“We’re disappointed we haven’t had Megan on the pitch more,” he conceded.

“She’s fit and we want to get her as much pitch time as we can.

“It’s competitive to get in the squad but her throw-ins are definite asset and it’s something we will use if we need to call on it.”

Having staked a claim for a starting position, Campbell is looking forward to an exciting week ahead.

“We’ve got two big games coming up – Bristol away and the FA Cup final,” she added.

“We want three wins of three. We’ll go to Bristol and fight. That’s our next focus.”
