Marie Hourihan has urged Man City Women to maintain their standards in the final games of the season.

Nick Cushing’s side secured a league and cup double with victories over Chelsea and Birmingham over the past week, but with a crucial two-legged Champions League tie and league finale still to come, the shot-stopper has her sights set on three more wins.

City host Zvezda Perm in the first leg of their maiden European adventure on Thursday 6 October (7pm), before travelling to Russia the following week for the away leg. The 2016 league campaign will be wrapped up on 30 October against Birmingham, and City have the chance to end the season as ‘the Invincibles’.

Hourihan told ManCity.com: “We’ve done the double this year which is unbelievable and now we go on to the next game and keep the momentum going.

“If we want to be a successful club, this is what it’s all about – playing in the big games.”

Speaking before Sunday’s Continental Tyres Cup final, the goalkeeper had expressed her excitement, declaring the competition had ‘extra special’ meaning for her since she had played every minute of it for the Blues.

The fact her side would go on to claim the trophy was the icing on the cake for Hourihan, who has enjoyed her first year at the club.

She reflected: “It was an unbelievable day. We made hard work of it, taking it to extra time, but everyone was absolutely delighted.

“We could see that they were tired in extra time and we knew if we stuck to our gameplan, we would get opportunities. It was about taking one of those and thankfully, we did.”

Hourihan also took a moment to acknowledge the fans, as the Academy Stadium’s record attendance was smashed once again with 4,214 witnessing a closely-fought contest.

“It was extra special to have the final at the Academy Stadium,” she added. “The fans were unbelievable.

“In the last ten minutes of normal time, I’d never heard noise like it. Let’s hope that carries on to Thursday’s game.”
