PARTNERS: Jane Ross congratulates Toni Duggan, who bagged from the penalty spot to secure the league title against Chelsea

Jane Ross hailed Man City Women’s defensive solidarity and attacking prowess, as City secured their first league title.

Goals from Jill Scott and Toni Duggan secured a 2-0 win over reigning champions Chelsea to hand the Blues a first crown, and the Scot – the league’s top scorer – felt it was fully deserved.

“It feels brilliant,” she told ManCity.com. “It was exactly what we wanted and it’s great to have achieved it.

“We’d put ourselves in a very good position going into the game. We knew a point would see us lift the trophy but we wanted all three and the performance we put in was deserving of a win.”

With City gaining a foothold in the game having broken the deadlock, Ross added the clash panned out as expected – and she was thrilled to repay the fans’ impressive support.

“We have a lot of respect for Chelsea – they’re a very good team – but as the game grew, we grew in confidence,” she reflected. “Defensively, we were solid and attacking-wise, we got the goals.

“The fans have been brilliant all season and to have so many of them turn out to cheer us on makes such a huge difference.”

The striker also hopes the trophy will be the first of two in a week, as City welcome Birmingham to the Academy Stadium on Sunday 2 October in the Continental Tyres Cup final.

“The focus will now turn to the next game, which is next Sunday,” she continued. “We’re excited for that cup final now – we want another trophy.”'
