Parris: Beating Chelsea would be the cherry on top

PARRIS LIFE: Nikita Parris is enjoying the best form of her career with Man City Women

PARRIS LIFE: Nikita Parris is enjoying the best form of her career with Man City Women

Nikita Parris believes the stars have aligned perfectly for a fairytale finish for Man City Women.

The Blues are one win away from lifting their first Super League title and can do so against the reigning champions Chelsea when the two meet on 25 September.

The influential Parris has been one of the top performers in an incredible campaign, which has seen Nick Cushing's side go unbeaten with 12 victories from 14 games.

City's attacking prowess has become a key talking point of the season and having expressed her delight with her individual form, the forward hopes her teammates will be rewarded for theirs with silverware.

"We're absolutely buzzing," she told ManCity.com, after the victory at Arsenal.

"Now, hopefully, we can win the league at our ground.

“We’ll rest and recover now; some of us will go away on international duty and then we’ll come back, regroup as a team and get ready - all of our thoughts will be on Chelsea.

“Of course we’ve got one more game to go after that against Birmingham but against Chelsea, we can obviously win the title by taking it off them at our own ground.

“That would be the cherry on top of the cake. Last season, we chased them all the way but this season, they’re chasing us."

The winger was named the Supporters' Club's Player of the Match in the triumph at Boreham Wood.

Understandable with skill like this on show...

Reflecting on the win which put her side in touching distance of the league crown, she said: "I’m glad we won. I was relieved – I think I ran my legs off!

“I thought we worked hard defensively as a team and we attacked well once we won the ball. We broke very quickly and we caused them problems down the sides.

“If you’re going to win the league, you have to be good defensively as well as attacking-wise and I think we are strong in all departments."

The goal that separated the sides arrived shortly after half-time, courtesy of Jane Ross' deflection off a Steph Houghton free-kick.

It was a huge slice of luck, but Parris asserts her teammate is deserving of it.

“Steph was trying to claim it but it’s got to go to Rossy," she laughed. "She’s the league's top scorer and she’s worked hard for it.

“She was absolutely amazing. The ball stuck to her. Every time we needed someone to take the pressure off, she was always there so credit to her on a defensive and attacking scale."
