MCWFC v Birmingham City Ladies: Match preview

Manchester City Women will look to return to winning ways in the FA Women's Super League with a victory over high-flying Birmingham City Ladies on Sunday.

Following last weekend's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Bristol Academy, Nick Cushing's side will be eager to secure three points in their penultimate league game, while the Midlands outfit will seek a victory to keep themselves in the title hunt.

Cushing insists his players are eager to finish the season strongly, ahead of the mouth-watering Continental Cup final clash with Arsenal Ladies - but anticipates another tough challenge for his squad against a side that emerged victorious in the reverse fixture back in June.

"We know Birmingham are a very good side and we also know it will be a difficult game for us – but I am confident we are more than capable of getting a win at home if we play as I know we can," he declared.

"As always, we’ve been preparing thoroughly and the players are eager to put things right after the Bristol game.

"Although we lost at the Stoke Gifford Stadium, I was really pleased with the performance. There were far more positives to take than negatives.

"I've watched the game back and I think if we'd have scored, we'd have scored a few.

"In football, you get games like that where you do everything but put the ball in the net. Their goalkeeper had an exceptional game though and was rightfully Player of the Match.

"Sunday will be another good test for us. Every league game is competitive and that’s reflected in the division itself. Birmingham really showed some real momentum at the start of the season and put a lot of wins together which really got them up there.

"If they come and play their game, they will be tough to beat. I hope we can build on the Bristol performance and earn a positive result.

"That's what we want to do. We want to win our last two games to finish the season as high as we can in the league and make sure we’re in top shape for our cup final."

Kick-off is at 2pm on Sunday 5 October at the Manchester Regional Arena. The FA Junior Fanzone will be attendance for supporters to enjoy tonnes of pre-match activities, including shooting practice, hair braiding, face painting, freestyling, live music and much more.

Admission for the clash is priced at just £1 for under-16s, £6 for adults and £5 for 16-21 year-olds. Disabled supporters and over-65s also receive discounted admission of £5.
