MCWFC v Liverpool Ladies: Match preview

Manchester City Women will look to bounce back from last weekend's last-minute defeat to Chelsea Ladies with a win over reigning champions Liverpool on Sunday.

The Blues, who have won three of their last four games, currently sit three points behind their Merseyside opponents but Abbie McManus believes Nick Cushing's side can return to winning ways against a side they've already locked horns with twice this season.

"We're really looking forward to the game," she declared. "Everyone's up for it and it would be great to get a win before the internationals go off on duty next week."

Prestwich-born McManus has particularly fond memories of playing the Reds, having scored a stunning half-volley to open the scoring in the Continental Cup clash back in May - a feat she'd like to repeat, if not quite as spectacularly.

"It would be nice to get another one - particularly so early on - but I don't think I'll ever score one like that again!" she laughed.

The defender also believes last weekend's disappointment has fuelled her side's motivation to continue their fine home form. On the back of a positive week of training and preparation, she insists the squad are in high spirits ahead of the clash.

"The defeat at Chelsea just makes us more determined to win on Sunday," she asserted. "It's always devastating to lose in the last minute - especially as we'd lost our captain [Steph Houghton] through injury and we'd wanted to win it for her.

"We're all feeling good. We've trained hard this week and we know Liverpool like to drop deep, get on the ball, try and play out from the back and hit direct balls.

"We're aware of that and hopefully, we can go out and show our own style as well as what we've learned in training.

"We like to press them high so we can win the ball back in their defending third. Hopefully, we can go out there and put things right."

Tickets for the game are priced at £6 for adults and £4 for under-16s and can be purchased online or outside the ground. Concessionary discounts are also available with admission for 16-21 year-olds, over-65s and disabled supporters priced at £5.

Kick-off is at 2pm at the Manchester Regional Arena, Rowlsey Street, M11 3FF.
