Gossip: Pjanic linked with City in Italian press

City are again being linked with a move for Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanic this morning.

Pjanic is a player Lionel Messi has reportedly suggested Barcelona sign this summer, but Tuttosport in Italy believe the Blues could be in for the Bosnian.

The Daily Star write: “City reportedly hold a ‘serious’ interest in Juventus star Miralem Pjanic as Pep Guardiola strive to bolster his central midfield options.

“City missed out on Napoli ace Jorginho last week as Chelsea hijack their £52m swoop at the last minute.

“Italian outlet Tuttosport claim City are now set to go in for Pjanic who Juventus could sell following their signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It is said the Turin giants want upwards of £80m for the 28-year-old Bosnian and Barcelona are also keen.

“Real Madrid star Mateo Kovacic remains the ‘most likely’ to join City this summer, the bookies believe.

“City are fans of the Croatia midfielder but have been put off by Real’s mammoth £85m asking price.

“Despite Guardiola and co shelving plans to land Kovacic, Ladbrokes still reckon he could head to the Etihad in time for the new season.

“The bookmakers are pricing the potential transfer at just 5/2 and ahead of any other player joining the Premier League champions.”

Staying with the Italian press and CalcioMercato believe that the Blues are tracking one of Roma’s brightest young talents – though with an eye on a future transfer window.

The report reads: “We exclusively understand that Roma starlet Cengiz Under is being monitored by Premier League giants Manchester City.

“Under signed for Roma last summer for a fee of 13.4 million euros from Turkish side Basaksehir and has become a very important player for the giallorossi since joining. He appeared in 32 games in all competitions last season, scoring eight times.

“CalcioMercato exclusively understand that Manchester City are monitoring Under and Pep Guardiola really likes the Turkish starlet.

“While City will not make an offer this summer, they will keep a watch on Under's progress over the upcoming season after the giallorossi rejected approaches from multiple clubs for the player back in May and June.”

Moving on and with plenty of discussion about who is the best keeper in the world at present, FourFourTwo place Ederson at No.6 – City fans would argue higher – but here’s what they had to say: “It’s difficult to remember a goalkeeper emerging quite as impressively as Ederson. The year 2017 was a breakthrough one for the Brazilian net-minder, who earned a €40m move to Manchester City that summer and became the second-most expensive goalkeeper in history.

“That came after a phenomenal 2016/17 season at Benfica in which he registered 17 clean sheets – 10 in 2017 – and proved to Pep Guardiola that he was the man to replace Claudio Bravo as a dependable sweeper-keeper. The Catalan was proved right: Ederson was magnificent as City romped to the Premier League title, keeping 17 clean sheets en route.”

Finally, returning to the Daily Star, former City favourite Craig Bellamy believes Riyad Mahrez will get even better under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola.

Here’s what ‘Bellers’ had to say: ‘He’s been a top player, he’s done a great job at Leicester.

‘It’s a great time for him to move on. He’s just another option.

‘I know it’s difficult obviously because of the money that they’ve spent but it was going to take that type of money to get him out of there.

‘These players attacking-wise are costing that kind of money now. He just adds another dimension to what is already a fierce attack.

“But I’m just interested because I believe Guardiola is the best coach in the world at this present moment.

‘I think he’s been the best coach in the world over the last six, seven, eight years.

‘I’m interested to see how he improves Mahrez. The best thing with Guardiola, he improves players, he makes them better.

‘Can he get Mahrez another level again? And if he can that’s exciting for Man City.’
