For past encounters with our rivals from Stamford Bridge have served to inspire and bring the very best out of our master marksman.
A glance at Kun’s individual goalscoring records against rival clubs reveal that Aguero now boasts his equal highest career tally against the Londoners.
To date, Aguero has notched up 15 strikes in all competitions (including two scored whilst at Atletico Madrid) against Chelsea from 18 appearances – a figure matched only by his individual record against Newcastle.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, for one, is no doubts about Aguero’s enduring powers and goal-scoring prowess.
He featured alongside Kun here at the Etihad for a season in 2014/15 towards the end of his own illustrious playing career and Lampard’s admiration for our all-time leading goal-scorer is crystal clear.
“In terms of an out-and-out goal scorer and finisher, Aguero is the best I’ve played with,” Lampard said back in 2017.
“He can be quiet for a lot of the game and then he’ll score you a winning goal, any kind of goal.
“Around the box he’s lethal, he’s sharp.”
Arguably even more impressive than the number, however, has been the nature and context of Sergio’s goals against the Pensioners.
More often than not, our meetings with Chelsea during Kun’s glittering City career have been high octane, high pressure affairs, with both sides sparring for silverware.
Yet the bigger the occasion and the greater the stakes, the more our Argentine all-time leading scorer has seized the moment
From his crucial penalty in a pivotal 2-1 league win over Chelsea during our first Premier League title winning season in 2011/12 through to that stunning hat-trick in last season’s memorable 6-0 defeat of Chelsea at the Etihad, there have been myriad highlights along the way.
With Gary Cahill having given the visitors the lead, that ice cool penalty under the Etihad lights back at the end of March 2012 was the catalyst for a rousing City fightback which culminated in Sami Nasri’s crucial late winner.
Aguero was Chelsea’s nemesis once again in April 2016 with Kun claiming his maiden City hat-trick away from home to help the Blues take another great leap forward towards the Premier League title.
His treble helped single-handedly down Chelsea in a memorable 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Kun’s first was the pick of the bunch, a clinical finish into the bottom corner, while he never looked like missing when Kevin De Bruyne put him one on one with Thibaut Courtois for his second.
Aguero then rounded off a bravura individual display by converting from the penalty spot.
If anything, under the inspired leadership of Pep Guardiola, Aguero has lifted his game to new heights.
There is even more to Aguero’s game now with his work-rate, aggression and tactical acumen only adding to his collective armoury.
However, he arguably remains English football’s pre-eminent marksman in and around the box.
As Guardiola memorably stated earlier this season: “He was born scoring goals and he will die scoring goals.”
And that avalanche of City goals, has also led to a glut of new landmarks and historical achievements, with several coinciding with some of his recent strikes against Chelsea.
Our greatest goal-scorer set another City career benchmark in our 2-0 Community Shield win over Chelsea in August 2018.
The opening strike from his Wembley brace saw Aguero record his 200th City career goal and helped light the sky Blue touchpaper on the Club’s historic, record-breaking Fourmidables campaign.
Chelsea were in Aguero’s firing line once again in February of this year, as he chalked up his second individual hat-trick against the men from Stamford Bridge – and second treble in seven days following his exploits against Arsenal the previous weekend.
His first almost lifted the roof off the Etihad. Picking up the ball in a tight area 30 yards from goal, Aguero shrugged off the attention of four defenders before smashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner which brought the Etihad to its feet.
Kun then followed up with a trademark poacher’s close-range finish and sealed the deal from the penalty spot.
Aguero’s treble was also notable for another factor.
The 11th league hat-trick of Aguero’s career not only brought him level with Alan Shearer as the Premier League’s all-time leading hat-trick scorer.
It also helped elevate him to become City’s top league goal scorer of all time, taking him clear of previous record holders Tommy Johnson and Eric Brook with Aguero’s league tally now standing at 173 – with the 31-year old having claimed a staggering 244 in total across all competitions.
Now we eagerly await the latest chapter in Aguero’s Chelsea story as City prepare to lock horns with Lampard’s impressive new-look side.
If past evidence is any guide, it could well be worth the wait!
