Kevin De Bruyne capped a man-of-the-match display by lashing home a stunning opener in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Cardiff – then admitted the effort was a fluke!

The Belgian produced a superb all-round performance and got Pep Guardiola’s side off to the perfect start by scoring from an acute angle after just five minutes, with Leroy Sane’s effort just before half-time sealing the win.

The dominant victory sends City back to the top of the Premier League table with a one point lead over title rivals Liverpool with just six games left to play.

Despite the cracking opener from KDB however, he admitted afterwards that the goal was slightly fortunate.

"I didn't mean the goal really, in the end it all counts” De Bruyne revealed.

"I wanted to give it hard in front of the keeper on the turn but when it goes in, it doesn’t matter.

"I think we did dominated. We did very well.”

Reflecting on his performance, De Bruyne says he was focusing on improving and regaining match fitness game by game after a season marred by two lengthy lay-offs.

“I won't compare myself to last year. My season has been very long,” the midfielder added.

“I had to work so hard three, four times to come back. I won't have the level of last year but it’s not about me, it’s about winning titles.

“It’s one game at a time. For me it’s been hard because my focus has been to come back in the right shape to help them team.”
