US Tour diary #2: The City that never sleeps

NEW YORK CITY: Selfie time in Times Square

NEW YORK CITY: Selfie time in Times Square

With the second leg of City’s 2018 US Tour complete, we reflect on what our Blues were up to in New York…

A taste of the Big Apple

We arrived in New York on Saturday, after a whirlwind opening leg in the Windy City.

Typically, the rain followed us from Chicago but it did little to dampen spirits, with our young squad still buzzing with excitement.

On Sunday, the players were given the day off and naturally, headed out to explore ‘the city that never sleeps’. Unsurprisingly, Times Square proved the most popular destination! What can we say? Bright lights, big City!

Some of the team would in fact return a few days later to give our BEAUTIFUL new away kit its first outing.

Our Champions bus and our roving Moonies (who are definitely living their best life on Earth right now!) also set off on a tour of the Big Apple, while the Premier League trophies visited Upper 90 Soccer in Manhattan.

Our lovable mascots glimpsed far more than they bargained for on their journey through New York’s Times Square and space though, colliding with a strange and certainly unorthodox creature…

On the subject of the extraordinary, the one and only Pep Guardiola headed over to Yankee Stadium on Sunday evening, where the eagerly-awaited Mets-Yankees derby was due to take place.

Our boss was invited to throw the first pitch but sadly, rain stopped play and the game was postponed. *Sigh*

All turned out fine though in the end – Pep simply spent the night with bae…

Pleasingly, Sunday night also heralded the arrival of Bernardo Silva, who returned early from his post-World Cup break to join up with the squad. Bem vinda, Bernardo!

Manic Monday

On Monday, we visited our American counterparts with a trip to NYCFC’s state-of-the-art City Football Academy. A home away from home!

The visit of course saw Jack Harrison return to his former stomping ground – and the former NYCFC man was at the receiving end of some light-hearted banter from the hosts upon arrival!

Both sides took part in an open training session before four of our City stars were invited to address the media. Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez all reflected on last season’s remarkable achievements – and the upcoming campaign, which of course holds so much excitement and promise.

Of course, we couldn’t meet up with our NYCFC pals without challenging them to a duel, and the two sides locked horns in a series of fun tasks with CityTV. Once again, the rain poured down in true Manchester style… but it only added to the tension and sheer drama (I jest!). Keep your eyes peeled for those brilliant videos in the near future!

After training, Sane jetted off to a shoot with the NBA, trying out the new editions of the NBA and FIFA video games against Brooklyn Nets star D'Angelo Russell. Side-by-side, the pair were the epitome of cool and the Hoops man even predicted the German winger would score against Liverpool!

Happy hunting

Tuesday tested our players’ detective skills, as Etihad and CityTV organised a Trophy Hunt. Bernardo Silva, Lukas Nmecha, Tosin Adarabioyo and Sane were tasked with locating our inflatable Premier League and Carabao Cup trophies, by deciphering a series of clues which unlocked the secret to each location. That video will be a must-watch!

The team had stepped up preparations for Wednesday night’s International Champions Cup clash against Liverpool with a training session that morning too, before Guardiola and Bernardo Silva previewed the encounter with a press conference.

Then, Mahrez was involved in a ‘football’ showdown with the New York Giants’ Sterling Shepard as part of the #GameRecogniseGame series. Both stars tested their skill at the others’ sport and our new Blue wasn’t bad at all! Check out that feature in September.

Ball game

Wednesday… matchday!

The Blues travelled to MetLife Stadium – the home of the Giants and the Jets – for our second game of the International Champions Cup tournament.

As basketball star Russell anticipated, Sane was on the scoresheet but our young Blues suffered a last-gasp defeat through Sadio Mane’s penalty, after Mo Salah had cancelled out the opener.

New signing Claudio Gomes also gained his first senior minutes on an encouraging night for our budding starlets.
