Man City 100 club: Shaun Goater

DREAM DAY: Goater puts in his second in City's 3-1 win over United at Maine Road

DREAM DAY: Goater puts in his second in City's 3-1 win over United at Maine Road

Shaun Goater isn’t just a cult hero at Manchester City; he’s a member of an exclusive group of players to have scored 100 times for the club.

Goater netted 103 goals for City during his five years at Maine Road and helped return to the Blues to the Premier League on the way.

Goater is part of a rare club of just 16 Manchester City players in history to have reached the three-figure landmark with only Sergio Aguero to have scored that many since.

Eric Brook is at the top of the tree with 178 goals, ahead of 166-goal Tommy Johnson. Aguero moved into third in the list at West Ham in January and now has 156 thanks to his brace against Monaco.

Joining in March 1998, with City all but consigned to relegation to England’s third tier, Goater had a big say in turning the club’s fortunes around.

The Bermudan striker’s first full season at the club, under Joe Royle, saw him net 21 times and finish as the club’s top scorer. His winner against Wigan Athletic in the play-off semi-final set up the famous Gillingham final that saw City return to the second tier.

He reached new heights in 1999/2000 as he scored 29 goals and was this time crowned City’s Player of the Year as the Blues were promoted to the Premier League.

A season of struggle followed in the top flight but Goater guided the club back to the promised land in 2001/02, scoring 32 goals in a record breaking year for Kevin Keegan’s men.

City were to make a much better go of it in the Premier League in their final season at Maine Road and Goater’s 100th Blues goal came on a day that has lived long in the memories of fans.

Having already found the net earlier in the final Manchester derby at Maine Road, Goater rounded off the scoring with a neat chip over Fabien Barthez to complete the 3-1 victory.

Goater saved his best for United that season, scoring again at Old Trafford, before the curtain came down on a beautiful partnership at the end of that campaign.

Happy 47th birthday, Shaun Goater!
