MILNER: City's former midfielder was crucial to the victory at West Brom

In the fourth of a festive series, we look back at some memorable games over the Christmas period...

Where and when?

Premier League

West Brom 1-3 Manchester City

The Hawthorns, 26 December 2014

Report...

Despite heavy snow, City clinched their ninth consecutive victory in all competitions with three first-half goals against the Baggies.

Fernando opened the scoring, as Ben Foster dropped Jesus Navas’ cross into his path, hooking the ball in over his head.

Yaya Toure then doubled the advantage from the spot, after David Silva had been upended – and the Spaniard extended the advantage with unerring accuracy.

Brown Ideye reduced the deficit after the break, converting from close range, but City held on to equal a club record of successive wins.

What it meant...

The victory ensured City kept pace with table-topping Chelsea. The Blues sat in second place – three points behind the league-leaders and seven ahead of neighbours United.

The defeat left struggling West Brom in 15th spot – two points above the relegation zone.

Reaction: Manuel Pellegrini

“It was a very important game because it is not easy to play on Boxing Day. We have to play three games in just a week so it was very important to start this week by winning this game away against a difficult team.

“It was very difficult to play because there was a lot of snow and also because if you are winning 3-0 it is difficult to continue with high pace especially when you have to play 48 hours after this game. We tried to keep the clean sheet but unfortunately they scored from a set piece.”
