THINGS WE LOVE: Best of the web from the week that was

What’s had us stroking our chins contemplatively or laughing out loud online this week?

The international break may have enforced upon us a fortnight-long break from City-related fun and games but there’s been no sense of famine when it comes to web-based gems.

In our latest edition of Things We Love, Club Journalist Mark Booth rounds up the best of the web from the week that was…

Cruyff: My Turn

“I knew nothing about football before knowing Cruyff” – Pep Guardiola.

If you want to learn more about the inner-workings and the foundations of the footballing principles of our manager, this is an essential read.

“My Turn”, Johan Cruyff’s autobiography, tells the story of the Dutch master’s playing and managerial career in the great man’s own words.

Arguably the most influential figure in the modern history of football, this is essential reading for all students of the beautiful game.

On the press tour for said book, both Jordi Cruyff and Guardiola took part in a lively Q&A at Waterstones in London where Johan’s son came out with a line that would put goosebumps on the forearms of City supporters the world over…

The One Where MCWFC Went to Russia…

“So no-one told you life was gonna be this way…”

You know the rest.

Judging by their individual social media outputs, FA WSL Champions Man City Women aren’t shy of a cup of coffee and they stumbled upon their very own Xanadu on their Champions League trip to Russia.

Jill Scott and Kosovare Asllani had been searching high and low for a version of Central Perk, the coffee shop frequented by Chandler, Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross in the evergreen US TV series, Friends.

They probably didn’t expect to complete their mission in the shadow of the Ural Mountains in Perm, Russia.

Funny old world, innit…

Film

Supersonic

The new Oasis documentary is earning rave reviews and is probably leading to a landslide of Ebay searches for classic City memorabilia.

The film, which charts the Gallagher brothers’ rise from a council estate in Burnage to the biggest band in the world is an hilarious and often touching rags to riches tale for the ages.

Will there ever be another band like them? Catch this one in cinemas while you can!

Comeback

Gundogan’s comeback

Following nearly a year out of action for the German national team, Ilkay Gundogan returned in an emphatic win over Czech Republic.

You’d have to have a heart of stone not to smile as the likeable German got back to where he belongs.

Soccer AM: Pep bans wifi

Quotes attributed to Pablo Zabaleta suggested that the new City boss has banned wifi at the team’s training centre to encourage more camaraderie and communication between the squad.

Sky’s Soccer AM team, hot off their runaway success with their John Stones sketch, donned their cagoules oncemore and riffed on the story in their own inimitable way.

The accent may be overblown for comic effect but we can’t deny our amusement.
