Derby Icons: Sergio Aguero

BACK OF THE NET: Sergio volleys City ahead in the 2013/14 Etihad derby

As we build-up to the 172nd Manchester derby, ManCity.com examines some of the sky blue icons from the fixture in years gone by…

In the the fourth of our series looking at City players who claimed iconic status during the Manchester derby, we look at the man the Reds perhaps fear the most....

The player…

Sergio Aguero

When news filtered through that Sergio was going to be banned for three games starting with Saturday's Manchester derby, it's fair to assume that United fans were rather pleased.

Any team would breathe a sigh of relief to not have to face the prolific Argentine, but the Reds in particular know how lethal he can be - and more often than not is - especially in the Manchester derby.

It seems Kun loves playing our cross-city rivals as much as any team in the Premier League - and perhaps a bit more.

His scoring record speaks for itself and his absence is a blow to Pep Guardiola.

In the nine games he has faced United, he's scored eight goals - he has twice missed the derby because of injury and this will be the third time in the last five years he has been missing from the Blues' attack.

But fear not... he should be back for the return at the Etihad...

The Moment…

Etihad Stadium, 2 November 2014

City were desperate to end a disappointing run of three games without a win to get the title challenge back on track while United laboured in mid-table.

In an ill-tempered game, Chris Smalling was dismissed on 39 minutes for his second bookable offence and the Blues laid siege to the United goal.

As City pinned back the Reds, it seemed the breakthrough had to come sooner or later - and on 62 minutes, it finally did.

Yaya Toure picked out Gael Clichy's run into the box with a precision pass.  The French full-back spotted Aguero's clever run and the Argentinian sent his shot over David De Gea to send the Etihad wild.

It was his 11th goal in 12 games and yet another goal against United. City held on to win 1-0 and move into third in the table while United slipped further off the pace.
