Opposition focus: Borussia Monchengladbach

The lowdown on City's group D opponents, Borussia Monchengladbach...

Nickname: Die Fohlen (The Foals)

League position 2014/15: 3rd in Bundesliga

Manager: Lucien Favre took over at Borussia Monchengladbach when they were languishing seven points adrift of Bundesliga safety in 2011. He helped them avoid the drop and has since led them to third and fourth place finishes in Germany's top division. A former Swiss international midfielder, he's previously managed the likes of Zurich and Hertha Berlin.

Captain: Martin Stranzl

Star man

Thorgan Hazard was signed permanently in the summer after a successful loan spell from Chelsea, while Swiss international striker Josip Drmic also joined from Bayer Leverkusen.

Stadium:  Borussia Park (54,057)

European Pedigree

Monchengladbach qualified automatically for the Champions League this term after being frustrated two years' ago when they were knocked out by Dinamo Kiev in the pre-group stage qualifiers.

They have made the Europa League Round of 32 twice in the last three years, and fans of the team in the 1970s will have rather fond memories of that competition in its previous guise as the UEFA Cup. Monchengladbach won the UEFA Cup twice in that decade, including in 1979 when they knocked out City on the way to the final.

European Honours

UEFA Cup: (2) 1975, 1979,

Domestic honours (most recent in brackets):

League title: 5 (1977)

German Cup: 3 (1995)

Past meetings and City links

City and Borussia Monchengladbach have only met twice in European competition before now and it was the Germans who came out on top - winning 4-2 on aggregate in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup. Mick Channon scored City's goal in a respectable 1-1 draw in Manchester, but City were undone 3-1 in the return leg by the team who would eventually go on to win the competition.

Qualified: Automatically via league position
