Bony hoping dream comes true against Barca

Wilfried Bony

Wilfried Bony is poised to make his Champions League debut against Barcelona this evening and realise a dream he has had for many years.

Bony is yet to play Champions League football, though has scored 15 goals in 31 European matches during his career to date.

He admits it would be a dream start to life in Europe’s premier club competition if he takes part in the Round of 16 tie with Barcelona.

“It will be a great moment for me if I play against Barca and would be fantastic to play my first Champions League game in such an important match,” said the Ivorian.

It’s not exactly an easy test but football is the same everywhere – you just have to enjoy it and I’m sure there’ll be many more games like this to come during my time at City

“We know how they play and they are in a good moment just now – apart from the weekend defeat to Malaga - and it won’t be easy, but we have to use our power and strength against them, create chances and see where it takes us.”

Bony made his City bow in the 5-0 win over Newcastle on Saturday and knows being a striker for the champions is perhaps different from his previous clubs.

The Ivory Coast star knows he won’t feature in every game with four strikers for Manuel Pellegrini to rotate, but he says the amount of games the club are involved in means there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone.

“We are very lucky because we have Dzeko, Jovetic and Aguero – all great players,” he said. “The big teams always have great strikers because if you want to win trophies, you’ll have to play a lot of games.

“I don’t think it’s possible for one player to play 38 Premier League games plus the Champions League, Capital One Cup and the FA Cup – you need a big squad to play in those matches and be successful.

“For sure, I know it’s not going to be like Swansea where I played every game – here we just need everyone to be fit and whether you start or have five minutes, you just need to be ready for when you are called upon.

“If I play against Barca in this game, I’m certain it will be a fantastic experience. These are the games every player wants to be involved in.”
