Fernandinho: City can compete with Europe's elite

Ferna

Fernandinho believes City are ready to challenge Europe’s elite in the Champions League, despite Wednesday night’s last-gasp defeat to Bayern Munich.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men fell to a 90th minute deflected Jerome Boateng strike but the Brazilian was pleased with the English champions’ performance, insisting the team will learn from the set-back.

"I think we can compete now [with the likes of Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona] – especially if we play like we did in Munich," he asserted.

"We didn’t play badly – we played well. I think the performance of the team and the way we played was good.

"We created some chances but unfortunately, we conceded the goal at the end.

In the Champions League, you have to keep your concentration until the end because the opposition can score and you can lose the game.

Reflecting on his own display, the midfielder declared: "I tried to recover my best fitness form and performance, as I arrived late after the World Cup.

"It was the first game I have played 90 minutes and for me, the Champions League is a little bit special.

"I like to play in this competition and I always give 100%. The Bayern game was no different."

The 29-year-old also vowed City will do everything they can to bounce back, targeting a victory over Chelsea on Sunday to reignite their league campaign following two winless clashes.

Ferna is keen to return to winning ways at the first opportunity to ensure the champions keep up with their title rivals.

"Now we are thinking about the Chelsea game,” he stated. "We have to win because of the draw against Arsenal and the loss against Stoke.

"We have to recover our points to stay at the top of the table."

There is only one way to watch City’s Capital One Cup third round clash with Sheffield Wednesday live.

The first step towards defending our trophy won at Wembley in March will not be shown live on TV anywhere in the UK, so make sure you’re at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 24 September.

Prices start at £5 for under-16s and £15 for adults, so no excuses: get your ticket now and make sure you don’t miss out!
