Yaya shortlisted for Ballon d’Or

Yaya Toure v Newcastle A39O5951

It’s the second time that the Ivorian has been included on the list for the award after his nomination in 2009 but it’s the first time he’s been recognised as a City player.

Toure is joined by a host of world greats on the list of nominees, which includes all of the usual suspects, such as four-time winner Lionel Messi, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahmimovic and Andres Iniesta.

City’s Group D UEFA Champions League opponents Bayern Munich are well represented on the list, with six of their European champions receiving recognition.

The Barclays Premier League contributes five players to the list – as well as Yaya, there is Luis Suarez, Mesut Ozil, Eden Hazard, Robin Van Persie.

That is one player shy of the La Liga total and two short of the Bundesliga's.

Yaya has become synonymous with City since signing from Barcelona in 2010 and he’s enjoying an excellent start to the 2013/14 season.

With four goals in the Premier League, one in the UEFA Champions League and one in the Capital One Cup, he’s already well on course to a best-ever goals tally at the club.

Toure’s partnership with Fernandinho has been one of the most eye-catching features of the early weeks of the season and helped him to the Etihad Player of the Month award for September.

The Ballon d’Or winner will be announced in Zurich on January 13 2014.
