It was the City forwards who grabbed the headlines in the Old Trafford hammering of United but it was the defence that provided the subtext – and the after match quotes.

When the Reds bossed possession 70-30 in the opening twenty minutes, the back four and the midfield stood firm and it was two of the star performers who put the resounding 6-1 triumph into perspective.

“It was a beautiful day,” declared skipper Vincent Kompany. “We made history but it is only three points and now Wolves is the important game.

“We respect United; a defeat like that can happen to anyone but we were focussed and sharp and we always felt it would be our day.

“When we were under pressure in the opening period we did all the right things as a team. Our fans deserve this chance to celebrate.

Micah Richards, who took home the television Man of the Match champagne, was a little less guarded.

“I have never been happier on a football pitch at the end of a game,” he grinned. “You have to remember that they were down to 10-men but it was unbelievable. We defended really well as a unit and team when we had to.

“It is what dreams are made of and I am sure it has made a few of our fans' dreams come true. We hope they are all happy.”
