Nigel de Jong and David Silva celebrated impressive victories in the battle to qualify for the European Championship finals next summer.
De Jong’s Holland enjoyed a 5-3 win against Hungary in Amsterdam. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes to help the Oranje maintain their 100 per cent record at the summit of Group E.
Silva came on during the second half in Kaunas and set up fellow substitute Juan Mata’s late goal as Spain beat Lithunia 3-1. The win means that the Spaniards have also claimed maximum points from their five games to occupy top spot in Group I.
Aleksandar Kolarov featured as Serbia drew 1-1 with Estonia. Konstann Vassiljev’s 84th-minute strike in Tallinn for the home side cost the Serbs the chance to go second in Group C. They are third, level on points with Slovenia.
Vincent Kompany didn’t feature for Belgium, but he will be delighted his compatriots beat Azerbaijan 4-1 to go second in Group A, five points behind Jerome Boateng’s Germany.
The defender’s recent injury ruled him out of Germany's 2-1 friendly defeat against Australia - the first for Joachim Low’s side since the 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-final exit.
The biggest City presence was in the England squad for the Three Lions’ friendly against Ghana at Wembley stadium. Joe Hart, James Milner and captain Gareth Barry all went the distance, with Joleon Lescott playing the second half of the 1-1 draw.
The Blues' international brigade are now heading back to training ahead of Sunday's crunch clash against Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League.
