Blues down Valencia in final warm up

City signed off pre-season in fine style in front of their own fans.

The Blues put their recent inconsistencies behind them to record a 2-0 win thanks to a first half Gareth Barry goal and another late in the game from Jo.

It was a taxing enough night to be the ideal warm up ahead of the trip to Spurs next Saturday lunchtime, a game that kicks-off the whole Barclays Premier League season.

Perhaps there were some clues as to what will happen next Saturday lunchtime in the City starting line up but then again...

In any case Joe Hart started in goal, Boateng, De Jong, Silva and Tevez all returned after their enforced post-World Cup lay off, the later as captain and the side had a youthful and powerful look about it.

That was confirmed in the early stages against a Spanish side that had played 24 hours earlier in a 0-0 draw at Villa.

In the first ten minutes Tevez’ chip through sent in the marauding Micah Richards whose right foot volley was tipped around post. Moments later Yaya’s 25-yarder was touched beyond the same upright by the busy and accomplished Moya.

A goal seemed inevitable and so it proved after twenty-nine minutes when Boateng’s cross to the far post found Barry unmarked and the England man made no mistake

...Chris Bailey

Thirty-five minutes in and a goal to the good, Mancini had seen enough of the clearly not match fit Tevez and Silva and the two – with little or no pre-season under their belts – made way for England duo Shaun Wright-Phillips and Adam Johnson.

There were three more changes at the break and even more through the second half and because of that the game lacked some rhythm but City were never in danger of losing their lead with Shay Given - apart from one smart late stop - as underemployed as Hart was in the first half.

Instead what the 27,000 crowd saw were some fine passing movements from the home side, the odd bit of wing wizardry from Adam Johnson and a wonderful curling left footed effort from Jo that thudded against the base of the post.

Then came the second goal and it was Brazil's Jo who scored it from a tight angle after a fine one-two between Adam Johnson and Patrick Vieira opened up Valencia.

CITY: Hart (Given 46), Richards, Boateng (Kolo Toure 46), Kompany (Ibrahim 78), Kolarov (Cunningham 73); De Jong (Vieira 46m), Barry (Weiss 68), Yaya Toure (Lescott 62), Silva (Wright-Phillips 36m), Tevez (Johnson 36m) and Adebayor (Jo 73).

VALENCIA (Start):  Moya, Miguel, Del Horno, Navarro, Dealbert, M. Topal, Joaquin, T. Costa, Soldado, Ever and Pablo H

Attendance: 27,088
