The latest Academy graduate to be added to City’s first team squad, Shaleum Logan, has revealed his sink or swim moment with the rest of the lads during the recent tour to Sweden.
Of the experience away the 19-year-old told us: “It was quality,” but Paul Dickov gave Logan something to think about before they’d even set off.
Shaleum explained: “Before we went away Dicky said to me, ‘I hope you’ve got your speech ready?’
“I had no idea about it and he said that if you go away with the first team you have to give a speech.
“He said, ‘Don’t worry about it, don’t let it play on mind.’ But it was ever since he told me.
“So I had to say a few words out in Sweden, but it was alright. I just thanked the Manager and the coaching staff for taking me out there.
“I also thanked the players for welcoming me into the first team – but they weren’t getting a song out of me!”
With the induction process out of the way the versatile youngster can turn his attentions to keeping his place in the senior squad.
So far so good then it would seem as he admitted: “When we got back training I asked Faz, ‘Where am I, with the first team or the reserves?’ He said I was with the first team, so it was finally sinking in, I’m around there at the moment and hopefully I can stay there.”
And with Michael Ball suspended for the first two games of the Barclays Premier League campaign as things stand at the moment Logan could well have a chance of a senior debut.
He added: “A few people have said that to me, but I wouldn’t want to get my hopes up, if it happens, it happens, but I’m going to try my best to make it happen.
“I just want to get as close to that first team as I can, keep trying to play well and hopefully things will happen. I couldn’t ask for anything more at the moment.
“If I do get there I’ll have a good chance to perform well. I’ve just got to take each day as it comes and each training session the same.”
