Davies: City's team spirit saw us to United win

DAVIES: The Elite Development Squad boss is delighted with his side's current form

DAVIES: The Elite Development Squad boss is delighted with his side's current form

Manchester City EDS boss Simon Davies has praised his side for the patience they demonstrated during the 3-1 victory over Manchester United.

United were reduced to ten men within 15 minutes but had to wait until the second half for goals from Brahim Diaz, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Paolo Fernandes to seal the victory.

Davies insisted he and his team were always confident that their passing ability would see United tire out.

He said: “We knew we had to be patient as they remained strong centrally so we had to find ways around them out wide and in behind we needed more runners.

“They defended well and worked hard but they couldn’t do it for the whole game so naturally more space appeared as the game wore on.

“The first fifteen minutes or so was very impressive due to how they worked as a team. After we scored there were players who didn’t put the graft in that we should have done and rightly so we conceded a goal because of that, which is another part of development.

“We focus on team spirit and that’s what will help these players develop to become first team players.”

First team players Angus Gunn and Tosin Adarabioyo both started for Davies’ side and the boss believes everyone at the academy can be proud of the way they are building future footballers.

“The league is always nice as it gives a goal to aim for but the major target for us is to get them within the first team set-up and then to prepare them for long and successful careers,” he said.
