Southampton v City EDS: Match preview

City EDS are out on an instant revenge mission on Tuesday night in their penultimate Barclays U21 Premier League assignment.

Patrick Vieira’s side take on Southampton at St Mary’s, just three days on from their 2-0 defeat to Saints at the Academy Stadium.

Despite dominating for lengthy spells, the Blues were undone by a goal in each half from the clinical Ryan Seager, consigning them to consecutive defeats for the first time since February.

City currently lie in ninth place in the division and can now only finish as high as fifth with wins from their two remaining games.

Victory over Martin Hunter’s side would bring City to within a point of the hosts ahead of the final day under-21 Manchester derby at the Academy Stadium on Saturday.

It remains to be seen whether Kean Bryan and Ashley Smith-Brown will recover from their injuries in time for the trip to Hampshire after they were withdrawn in the first-half on Saturday.

League Table

Whatever happens on Tuesday and Saturday, City can look back on a hugely promising season in which they have been competitive in a number of domestic and continental competitions.

Their victory over FC Porto at the start of the month in the International Premier League Cup final secured the first trophy of Vieira’s stewardship and was a fitting reward for progress made at youth level in recent years.

We’ll bring you goal updates from the 7pm kick-off at St Mary’s on Twitter and a match report here on mcfc.co.uk shortly after full-time.
