City’s youngest-ever goalscorer Marcos Lopes inspired his country to a semi-final finish at the Euro u19 Championships in Lithuania.
Although Marcos was one of the youngest in the competition, he was arguably one of the players of the tournament for a talented Portugal under-19 outfit.
The young Portuguese tyros were ultimately knocked out on penalties by Serbia in the last four and City's 17-year old did his growing reputation in the game no harm at all with a string of fine performances.
Lopes started all four of Portugal’s final round games in Lithuania and lit up the last game of the group stage with a stunning 30-yard strike in their 4-2 win over the hosts.
In total, Marcos scored four goals in Portugal’s run to the semi-finals, including one in each of the qualifying games against Latvia, Israel and finalists, France.
Portugal drew 2-2 with Serbia in the semi-final but lost 3-2 on penalties which denied them a place in the final but they can still reflect on the positives after reaching this stage of the annual competition for the first time since 2003.
Serbia will play France in the final of the UEFA Euro u19 Tournament on Wednesday evening.
Lopes will join up with Patrick Vieira’s EDS squad for the Oberndorf Tournament in Germany which kicks off on Friday.
The Blues face Borussia Mönchengladbach and Fluminese of Rio de Janeiro on Match Day One.
