Walking Football team compete in Spain

Seventeen players from CITC’s Walking Football team embarked on a trip of a lifetime to sunny Spain earlier this month, to compete in a tournament arranged by local City fans.

The group of players, aged between 53 and 74, enjoyed the local hospitality of Los Montesinos before beginning two-days of friendly competition, which saw them come out on top with a convincing 4-1 win in the final.

The City team not only took the cup, but they won the hearts of the local spectators and were invited for dinner with the Mayor. CITC staff Lee Mannion and Daniel Landstrom then presented the Village with a signed Manchester City match ball to mark the occasion.

The week was a huge success and was enjoyed by all the players whom 12 months ago had never met each other. Friendships were strengthened and memories were created.

Eddie Carter, 68, said: “I thought my days of going on football tours were long gone and if you’d have said to me last year I’d be going to Spain to play football for Manchester City Walking Football team I’d have thought you were joking.

“I am so grateful to have found these sessions and have made many friends.”

Lee Mannion, Community Football Co-ordinator, said: “City in the Community’s Walking Football initiative has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months and we’re so proud to be able to compete internationally – everyone had a brilliant time!

“City in the Community is passionate about using the power of football to make a difference and Walking Football provides participants of all abilities with the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful game, regardless of age or experience.

“Our weekly sessions provide a great platform to take part in regular exercise in a friendly environment and we’re encouraging even more people to get involved.”

Walking Football sessions take place twice a week at Manchester Tennis and Football Centre. For more information contact Lee Mannion on 01614387831 or lee.mannion@cityfootball.com
