Brookburn school strike a balance

City in the Community’s (CITC) Strike a Balance team and the Vermillion Restaurant recently visited Brookburn Primary School in Chorlton.

One of the aims of Strike a Balance aims is to get young people eating a healthy balanced diet and to try new and exciting food.

And this new partnership involves the head chef from Vermillion restaurant, which is situated near to the Etihad Campus on Hulme Hall Lane, visiting schools and delivering cooking presentations for young people.

The morning included the Chef talking about different ingredients and the preparation of a Thai meal, a question and answers session and the chef cooking a delicious chicken stir fry in front of the group which  all the pupils had a chance to taste.

The coaches from CITC interacted with young people asking them questions about the information that had learnt from the Strike a Balance programme.

Hannah Steele, Healthy Schools Co-ordinator said “The day was great; the young people really enjoyed themselves. A chef coming into school to talk about food and demonstrate how to cook a meal is something they will never forget.”

Strike a Balance is a partnership between CITC and Manchester Healthy Schools which see’s CITC offer a free five-week healthy living programme to 120 primary schools in Manchester.

Using examples of Premier League footballers such as Joe Hart and Gareth Barry, each session covers a different area of healthy eating and is followed by a football session.Topics covered include:

• The balance of good health
• Why we eat what we eat
• The importance of physical activity
• Cooking healthy, balanced meals
