It was just about brunch time in his time zone, and Green, the head of ATL Cityzens, the city’s Official Supporters Club, expected a heavy turnout for the chapter’s watch party.
“The great thing about being a Cityzen -- and I’ve noticed this in every city I’ve been to -- is win or lose, we have a great time,” he said. “We started [this club] with only five members, and we’re now at almost 100 paid members, with more than 180 people on the mailing list -- just for Atlanta! We understand we’re the new kids on the block, but we’re the noisy neighbors, and we embrace that.”
Green, a third-generation City fan whose family moved from England to Atlanta in the 1990s, has based his Atlanta Supporters’ Club since 2016 out of Brewhouse Cafe. The English-football-themed bar serves up morning pints and brunch from the epicenter of Little Five Points, one of the city’s hippest and most diverse drags.
But while a crowd of more than 60 packed a room in Atlanta, across the US -- spanning some four time zones -- Official Supporters Clubs from San Francisco to South Florida packed out pubs to watch City defend the title. The 4:30 p.m. local kickoff time in the UK made for fairly civilized gathering times in the US -- 11:30 a.m. on the East Coast, and 8:30 a.m. on the West Coast.
As such, we gathered photos and videos from Hollywood to New York to see how Official Supporters Clubs celebrated the Cup win. Some of the newer branches -- for example in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Grand Rapids, Michigan -- boasted solid turnout, while the Twin Cityzens in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota braved a snowstorm to get together.
