Summerbee: City will be inspired by 125 kit

TRUE BLUES: Micah Richards, Tommy Doyle, Tony Book, D'Margio Wright-Phillips, Paul Dickov, Cole Palmer and Mike Summerbee at Wednesday's 125 kit unveiling
Mike Summerbee hopes City’s commemorative 125th anniversary season kit will inspire Pep Guardiola’s men to Community Shield success.

The Premier League Champions will proudly sport the specially designed PUMA strip at Wembley on Sunday, as the ‘Fourmidables’ face runners-up Liverpool in the traditional season curtain-raiser.

The kit is inspired by the Club’s history, with specific design elements voted for by the Club’s fans, and is primarily light blue with a white trim.

Free from sponsorship, emblazoned with gold lettering to denote the Club’s 125 years and featuring a ship and copy of the Club’s founding document, the strip celebrates our Manchester heritage and history.

Club legend and Ambassador Summerbee, who played a pivotal role in City’s success of the late 60s and early 70s, adores the strip and is optimistic the current crop of Blue stars will shine in the retro gear.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he smiled. “It takes me back to when I used to play.

“It’s a proper City shirt – the round collar and the colour is perfect. It’s a fantastic shirt and it makes me want to play again! Unfortunately, I’m a bit too old!

“The players are going to wear it for the Community Shield. I hope they’ll love playing in it. It’s a great shirt.

“It’s fantastic (that it will be worn at Wembley). It’s a memory-jerker for the older players. The players who will be wearing it at Wembley will enjoy wearing that colour shirt and that style.

“Hopefully, it will bring us some luck. We’re a very good side.”

City hero Paul Dickov, who of course enjoyed his own Wembley wonder moment in the 1999 Play-Off Final, echoed the sentiments.

“It looks amazing,” he declared. “The one thing I love about it is that it has a touch of class, and that’s what City are about at the moment.

“For the Club to have all the success we’re having but still remember everything that happened beforehand in our 125-year history embodies everything I love about the Club.”

Dickov also hailed the kindness of City’s partners Etihad and Nexen Tire, who generously waived their sponsorship rights to allow the kit to portray a vintage feel.

“In an age where it’s all about sponsorship, it’s good to see a kit like this,” he added.

“There’s a touch of class about it – it’s totally understated. There’s a humility to it and it looks fantastic.”

Previewing Sunday’s encounter, Dickov continued: “Of course, you want to win.

“I was on the Asia Tour and when you’re in and around the first-team squad at Manchester City now, the desire to win every single game – whether it’s a pre-season friendly or a cup final – is clear.

“They want to win every single game they play and on Sunday they’ll want to put a marker down for the rest of the season.”

The much-loved commemorative kit was unveiled at a special fan event held at the City Football Academy on Wednesday night to launch our 125th anniversary season.

As part of the festivities, three fans enjoyed an unforgettable surprise, called out from the crowd to receive one of the shirts and snap a photograph with our Academy stars Tommy Doyle, D’Margio Wright-Phillips and Cole Palmer.

Graham Brine was chosen for a picture with Doyle – grandson of Mike and Glyn Pardoe – and expressed his delight.

“It’s absolutely amazing to have been selected for the surprise photo with Tommy Doyle and to get the shirt,” he said.

“It was amazing – a complete an utter surprise.

“It’s a fabulous shirt. It’s beautiful – a lovely style – and it’s nice of the sponsors that it doesn’t have advertising.

“It has the ship on the back, which is good, and the badge with the 125 years. And it’s limited edition, which is amazing.

“Hopefully, it will bring us luck on Sunday!”
