Ex-United players sign up for Kompany testimonial

LEGEND: Vincent Kompany.

LEGEND: Vincent Kompany.

Vincent Kompany’s testimonial will have a derby day feel to it, with ten former Manchester United players confirmed as part of the Premier League All-stars squad.

Edwin van der Sar, Gary and Phil Neville, John O’Shea, Wes Brown, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Robin van Persie have all agreed to play in the team that Belgian manager Roberto Martinez will lead.

Monaco’s Cesc Fabregas will also be involved, joining the already-confirmed Emile Heskey and Rafael van der Vaart.

The away team’s stellar lineup is a fitting tribute to a man who will be remembered as one of the Premier League's great captains, while the inclusion of so many ex-United players is testament to the impact Kompany has had both on and off the pitch in his adopted city.

The game takes place at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday 11 September at 7.45pm on what is set to be an unforgettable evening, with a host of former fan favourites playing for the City Legends, managed by Pep Guardiola.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that Mario Balotelli will be involved, while Sergio Aguero and David Silva, who Kompany enjoyed so much success with, will also play a small part in proceedings.

They’ll be joined by: Joe Hart, Shay Given, Gael Clichy, Aleks Kolarov, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards, Pablo Zabaleta, Dedryk Boyata, Wayne Bridge, Richard Dunne, Nigel de Jong, Samir Nasri, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Stephen Ireland and Craig Bellamy.

Tickets are on sale now at mancity.com/tickets and all proceeds will go to Tackle4MCR – the initiative Vinnie set up with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, to address rough sleeping and homelessness on the streets of our city.
